Meditation

The word meditation is derived from two Latin words: meditari (to think, to dwell upon, to exercise the mind) and mederi (to heal). Meditation helps you gain a new perspective on stressful situations, increase self-awareness, focus on the present, and reduce negative emotions.

Pranayama is the yoga for breath. In a Yogic point of view, proper breathing is to bring more oxygen to the blood and to the brain, and to control Prana or the vital life energy. Each class focuses on breath awareness and a gentle guided Yoga Nidra. Yoga Nidra is ‘dynamic sleep’ or in other words ‘psychic sleep’ in which you learn to relax consciously. It is the key to penetrate the latent realms of the mind, and train the mental faculties to access the immeasurable powers of the subconscious and unconscious mind.

Research shows that mediation can help combat illnesses and conditions like high blood pressure, cancer, and insomnia. Let’s stay healthy through meditation!

Class is 45 minutes. 15 minutes Pranayama/Yoga Nidra and 30 minutes Meditation.

Yoga Etiquette

What to wear:

Wear non-restrictive clothing that allows ease of movement but nothing too baggy or loose. Please do not wear heavy perfume and oils.

Eat lightly, or refrain from eating before class.

Generally, yoga asana is best practiced on an empty stomach. This way your yoga practice does not interfere with the digestion process.

Bare feet:

Yoga is practice on bare-feet. Please remove shoes before entering the studio.

No cell phones:

Please do not disturb the class. Keep cell phones in lobby with belongings or keep it on silent.

If you do arrive late:

In consideration of other students and for your own safety, unravel your mat outside, and then enter as slowly and quietly as you can. If the class is sitting in a beginning meditation, it is best to wait quietly at the entrance and lay your mat down on the floor only after the meditation has concluded.

Practice at your own pace.

Listen to your body and embrace your own pace. Yoga is NOT about competition. It IS about receiving the physical and spiritual benefits. Respect your body and it’s limits. Rest whenever needed.

Mats and Props:

We encourage all our students to bring their own mat. Mats are available to rent for $2 just in case. Props are also provided to assist in your practice. And to keep the studio nice and tidy, please put away props neatly.

  • Why Transform Yoga?

Most programs focus mainly on calorie intake and output; exchanging points for meals. Some programs ask that you commit to ordering your meals and are marketed under the guise that it is good for you, when in fact they are full of preservatives and artificial flavors. Other programs would rather you participate in high cardio polymeric exercises that can be tough on your heart, joints, and diet. Transform is different. We focus on helping you understand that small adjustments in your everyday routine will give you a larger payoff in the long term.
Are you ready to start taking care of yourself? Do you want to know that you will have a team of Instructors, Peers, and Friends available to help you transition through lows and raise you up when achieving your highs? Are you ready to Transform? If you’re ready to make a deep commitment to yourself and would like to make this journey with like-minded people, then this is the program for you!

    Private Lessons

In a private yoga session, there is undivided attention to your yoga practice, tailoring the session to your individual needs. Private yoga classes can take you further in your practice than a group class can.

There may come a time when a student’s need can best be served in a one-on-one relationship with a teacher. Private lessons can help you:

    • Rehabilitation of injuries or working deeply on a certain troublesome area of the body
    • Learn to work through obstacles in specific poses you find difficult
    • Gain insight into your unique structural issues through hands-on adjustments and personal feedback
    • Receive personalized instruction with undivided attention and observation
    • Learn to adapt poses for your specific needs
    • Develop an individualized personal practice with professional guidance

Complete beginners can also benefit from private instruction, safely learning the basics in a more private setting.
It’s easy to set up private lessons at Yoganette…just call us at (626) 965-4000 and we’ll take care of you!

    • Why I love Yoga: It helps me find balance. I started doing yoga because of the physicality behind it. Then I discovered that I can find center and inner peace through it.
    • Interesting fact: I have a lot of duality. Most people are black and white, but I tend to have both.
    • Favorite food: French food.
    • Favorite color: I’m still going through my blue period. I’m also going through my plaid period. I love blue and plaid! I’m getting into the red period. And always black!
    • Teaching Style: A mix between Iyengar and Vinyasa.

    Alex Rectra

    • Why I love Yoga: I love yoga because it awakens our sense of total body awareness as we move dynamically through space.
    • Interesting fact: Former vegetarian.
    • Favorite food: Green tea ice cream
    • Teaching style: My teaching style is active, dynamic, and unpretentious.

    Annie Chang

    • Why I love Yoga: My goal as a teacher is to inspire my students to make a connection with their deepest dimension, so they can heal themselves on either a physical or emotional level. Through understanding the physical practice, along with awareness of the breath, spirit and mind, I believe yoga can create a sense of calm, clarity and grounding that can transcend beyond the yoga studio to everyday life.
    • Interesting fact: > I used to be the design director for a major fashion retailer. Now I teach yoga and couldn’t imagine a more rewarding career path.
    • Favorite food: My banana hemp shake I make every single morning. It’s nutritious, satisfying and totally vegan!
    • Teaching style: Blend of body sculpting with a flowing Vinyasa; a beautiful balance of two opposites.

    Annie Yeakel

    • Why I love Yoga: Yoga has kept me physically, mentally and spiritually grounded since my first practice over 8 years ago. My yoga practice has carried me through sorrow and joy and given me the strength, both mentally and physically, to face anything life has to offer. I am a firm believer that yoga can have benefits that reach far beyond the mat, and I am humbled and blessed to be able to share what I love.
    • Interesting fact: I grew up on a ranch, with chickens, ducks, dogs, cats, horses, ponies, and a llama named Dolly.
    • Favorite food: That’s a tough question. I’m gonna have to go with sweet potato fries
    • Teaching style: I’m hatha yoga (aren’t we all?) with Anusara and Ashtanga influences. I guess generically, it would be considered vinyasa or flow…

    Antoinette Contreras

    • Why I love Yoga: I completely fell in love with yoga 10 years ago – it lifted my spirits. It’s been in and out of my life…but a few years ago I religiously turned to it to de-stress and to work on chronic injury and pain. I was completely healed and promised to keep yoga in my life. And a huge plus – I shed about 30 pounds! Oh…an ultimate bonus…I’ve met the most wonderful and beautiful people because Yoga is in my life.
    • Interesting fact: I’m a raw foodie! I will drive for delicious RAW food!
    • Favorite food: There’s nothing like a big juicy bone-in rib-eye steak and baked potato (with the works!)…yummy! That was before RAW food entered my life! Now I’m 90% raw. I didn’t think I’d ever find anything to match my passion for yoga…and then there is RAW!
    • Teaching style: I looooove focusing on alignment…allowing students to experience amazing energy their body internally creates…feeling balanced and rooted.

    Ashlyn Medina

    • Why I love Yoga: Yoga helps me see myself as I truly am. Every time I step onto the mat I am given the chance to accept myself fully— with all my aches, pains, worries, frustrations, joys, and love. It has helped me better understand and connect with my body, my mind, and my spirit and has also allowed me to better love the world around me. I’m fully convinced yoga teaches you how to heal.
    • Interesting fact: I recently learned how to slack line (kind of like walking on a tightrope). I even have one set up in my backyard!
    • Favorite food: Right now I’d have to say Thai and Indian food are my favorite. I absolutely love all the spices! Also, they both have a lot of delicious vegetarian options.
    • Teaching style: I draw from many styles of yoga but predominately from Hatha and Ashtanga Yoga. I try to teach in a way that enables my classes to be a moving meditation. To me, yoga is about connecting with all aspects of ones being—mind, body, spirit— so conscious breathing (i.e. pranayama) is also very important.

    Christina Medina

    • Why I love Yoga: I love yoga because it helped me find my breath. In our fast-paced, hurried world, we forget to breathe…and be. Yoga creates the time and space, allowing me and reminding me, to do both.
    • Interesting fact: I’ve been married over 27 years! We have four beautiful adult daughters!
    • Favorite food: Pretty much anything gluten free, especially if it’s homemade with love! If you don’t know what that means, ask me. I’d love to talk with you about it!
    • Teaching style: Freestyle – a mixture of hatha and flow.

    Erica Nelson

    • Why I love Yoga: Yoga is a tool that we can use to connect our mind and body to our ethereal self. With Yoga we can fly. While I am still green to this new path in my life, I find that I have a deeper connection to others and myself. Through our mutual practices, we all help each other to push a little harder, breath a little deeper, and move more gracefully. No one is ever a Guru. Master is Student and Student is Master. I embrace the spiritual benefits alongside the physical ones.
    • Interesting fact: Besides being a closet gamer (Antoinette already outted me =P) … I used to read tea leaves and make my own soaps.
    • Favorite food: Such a hard question!!! Ugh! It would have to be homemade Persimmon Jam on freshly baked bread!
    • Teaching style: I like my meditation classes to vibe off the energy of the space I’m in and the people I’m with. Meditation should be restorative, insightful, and purifying. I love to incorporate scent and sound into every practice.

    Karen Kazanci

    • Why I love Yoga: Yoga for me is about creativity, imagination, happiness, and confidence. I get to spend 90 minutes twisting and turning my body into shapes that I never thought could be possible. I find joy in learning new ways to stretch, strengthen, and heal my body through yoga. Everyone can do yoga regardless of age, shape, and size. Yoga forces people to let go of everything and truly be in the moment. When I watch students leave a yoga class, they look and feel lighter, happier, and more radiant.
    • Interesting fact: I speak 3 languages…and I was the main character in a music video.
    • Favorite food: Italian
    • Teaching style: Karen teaches kids yoga, beginners and all levels Hatha Vinyasa flow classes. Karen likes to create energy and heat in her classes. Her classes are fun, lively, supportive, and energetic. She focuses on proper alignment, building strength, and endurance. Karen’s goal is to have everyone feel comfortable at the level they are at. She wants people to leave her classes feeling great!

    Michelle Fernandez

    • Why I love Yoga: I love yoga for so many reasons. I love the history
of yoga and how it has evolved beautifully. I love that it is universal and practiced by the young and old, able and disabled, black and white. I love that it can be practiced anywhere from your bedroom to the top of Half Dome. Most of all, I love the everlasting effects it has on an individual mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually.
    • Interesting fact: I lived in Cusco, Peru.
    • Favorite food: I seriously love everything!! Japanese, Thai,
Chinese, Nicaraguan, Mexican, Filipino, Korean, Vietnamese, Greek, and the list can go on! I am always down for a slice of pizza or a juicy burger!
    • Favorite color: I have always loved purple, but I also love earthy
colors like deep browns and reds.
    • Teaching style:My class is a Vinyasa flow based from my Iyengar,
Ashthanga, and methodical sequencing training. I link each pose by the breath, present poses and modifications for all levels, but love to challenge you introducing more advanced postures.

    Monique Jaime

    • Why I love Yoga: What I love about yoga is that its more than just an exercise, its a lifestyle, and I love sharing in that lifestyle each and every day with my students. Yoga has benefited my life in countless ways, and I thank God everyday for letting me take part in my passion.
    • Interesting fact: I first discovered yoga during a difficult time in my life. I remember feeling like my life lacked direction and passion, but after my first yoga class all of that changed. I suddenly felt inspired, and immediately knew that I was going to dedicate myself to becoming the best yogi I could be.
    • Favorite food: I love cheese!
    • Teaching style: I teach a style called Vinyasa Flow, it is called this because of the smooth way that the poses run together and become like a dance. This style allows a lot of variety, but will almost certainly include Sun Salutations, expect movement, not just stretching. Whether the class is fast or slow I it consider it level II.

    Nancy Stannard

    • Why I love Yoga: Yoga as a practice centers me and brings me back to my Authentic self. Yoga as a lifestyle keeps me focused on what’s really important.
    • Interesting fact: I am a recovering former Type A, perfectionist. Now my favorite yoga is gentle and restorative.

    • Why I love Yoga: I love Vinyasa yoga! I practice yoga because it keeps my mind, body, and spirit all balanced and flowing wonderfully together. It lets me honor everything I want to give dues to, and in return it honors me back. And it just simply makes me happy and warm and fuzzy inside :)
    • Interesting fact: Until I hear them speak, I like to pretend that everyone I encounter has a British accent…!
    • Favorite food: MANGOS. And sourdough bread. Just not the two together.
    • Favorite color: Any colour I can see and/or distinguish.. hah! (but I’m quite partial to rich, full blues like cerulean or cobalt!)

    Monique Fierro

    • Why I love Yoga: I am still in exploration with a favorite yoga style but very intrigued with Anusara yoga. Yoga is this dance that allows my spirit, mind, and physical body to come together. My practice is a way of stepping inwards in acceptance and listening to where I am.
    • Interesting fact: I’m ordained a minister through Universal Life Church and have united 3 couples in love.
    • Favorite food: Ethiopian food….yum!!!
    • Favorite color: Green

    Nancy Pan

    • Why I love Yoga: I love the way my yoga practice changes and grows with me. I can be having a completely stressed out horrible day, but after a yoga class my body and mind always ends up in a more relaxed state. That first inhale after stepping out of a yoga class is always so uplifting and refreshing, you really do feel like you can conquer anything.
    • Interesting fact: My favorite gifts to give are homemade one, so I am usually baking or crafting in my free time!
    • Favorite food: Homemade chocolate cake: moist chocolate cake with gooey dark chocolate frosting.

    Past Yoga Instructors

    Briana Rosas

    • Why I love Yoga:Yoga allows me to understand myself on a much deeper level I ever thought possible. I realized what my weaknesses and strengths are through asanas, poses, and every single movement I make in a yoga practice. With our forever changing emotions and temperaments, yoga allows me to stay in control. I understand my emotions better, and even though we all have our moments of weakness, I am able to entirely accept myself and who I am. Even with all the flaws I have…I accept this, and am happy.
    • Interesting fact: My favorite music is Japanese Visual Kei/Heavy Metal. Other than yoga, headbanging and moshing at a death metal concert is the best workout ever!
    • Favorite food: Lasagna, and any kind of Japanese cuisine.
    • Teaching style: My specialty is Ashtanga yoga. I pull from the Primary Series, Intermediate Series, and only sometimes do I show you a few poses from the Advanced A Series (if the class is ALL LEVELS). Like all Ashtanga teachers, I focus on coordinating the breath with each movement so that you can purify the blood and build stamina in your practice. I do love meditation, so at the end of every practice, I will give you a nice chance to relax!

    Erica Majtenyi

    • Why I love Yoga: I love yoga because it keeps me healthy, quiets my mind, and gives me confidence about every aspect of my life. I never thought I would be able to touch my toes, and now I can put my entire palm on the ground! Normally my thoughts would always find ways to tell me that I’m not good enough to do something or worries too much about the past, and yet when I step onto my yoga mat, my mind immediately becomes still and non-judgmental. And throughout my life I have felt self-conscious about my looks and my unique personality, but when I practice yoga, I feel beautiful.
    • Interesting fact: I love video games! I would play them morning, noon, and night if I could.
    • Favorite food: Macaroni and Cheese

    • Why I love Yoga: Yoga is overall wellness. I started Yoga over 10 years ago and since then I’ve not only felt healthier and stronger, but I also function better both physically and mentally.
Yoga has also helped my self-esteem. English is my second language and because of my accent, I wouldn’t go certain places, talk to some people or apply to some jobs. Yoga helped me overcome all these insecurities; my focus is better and my mind is stronger, and now I am teaching Yoga and getting great reviews for it.
Those of you who never tried Yoga – “just do it” and if you are practicing it I hope you keep up the good work.
    • Interesting fact: I can imitate people…sometimes….
    • Favorite food: Lamb chops and french fries!

    Frequently Asked Questions

What do I wear to class?

Clothing should be comfortable and allow for free range of motion. Tight clothes may impede circulation and your body’s energy flow. It is best to avoid strongly scented perfume or fragrances as a courtesy to those who are chemically sensitive.

    I’m not flexible…can I take yoga?

Yes! Come to class so you can become flexible! Keep in mind, every person’s body is made differently therefore, progress time varies from person to person.

How many times a week should I attend class?

Yoga is amazing-even if you only practice for one hour a week, you will experience the benefits of the practice. If you can do more than that, you will certainly experience more benefits Starting with two or three times a week is a good start. If you can only do 20 minutes per session, that’s fine too. Don’t let time constraints or unrealistic goals be an obstacle-do what you can and don’t worry about it. You will likely find that after awhile your desire to practice expands naturally and you will find yourself doing more and more.

I have an existing injury, is it ok to try yoga?

Always feel free to introduce yourself to your instructor and describe any injuries you might have. He or she will then be able to advise you as to how to “work around” your problem area to avoid further injury. The instructor may also be able to suggest particular exercises that might help to bring increased mobility and healing to your injuries. In any event, listen to your body’s feedback. If anything you do in yoga feels painful or uncomfortable, you should “back off”. Your instructor will most likely be able to recommend an appropriate alternative pose for you during the class.

When can I expect to see progress?

Each individual will respond differently, based on a variety of factors such as: age, physical condition, genetics, etc. It is more important to embrace where your practice is and let go of any self-imposed goals. Yoga is truly a life-long practice, one that you can go on exploring as long as you live.

Why are you supposed to refrain from eating 2 to 3 hours before class?

In yoga practice we twist from side to side, turn upside down, and bend forward and backward. If you have not fully digested your last meal, it will make itself known to you in ways that are not comfortable. If you are a person with a fast-acting digestive system and are afraid you might get hungry or feel weak during yoga class, experiment with a light snack such as yogurt, a few nuts, or juice about 30 minutes to an hour before class.
